The enigmatic Jodye Colliaye

You know you’re in for a brilliantly unique listening experience with one read of up-and-coming star, Jodye Colliaye’s Spotify bio. I had the great pleasure of having a chat with Jodye following his eponymous debut EP.

“I think R&B is the rock of my sound, but then all of those

other influences come into play and just make it into

its own kinda thing.”

Hi Jodye, where do you ‘hail’ from?

What’s up Lisa! I come all the way from Miami, FL born and raised.

How did you get started with music?

Ever since I was 6 I’ve always sung. My first CD was ‘Confessions’ by Usher and I used to sing that almost everyday. Music’s always been in my life in some way or another but I never really had any intentions on doing anything with it until last year when I released ‘Heartbreaker.’ It’s been really fun though, I’ve been playing piano since last Summer too.

I can hear a lot of genre fusion in your work; how would you describe your music?

If I had to describe it in anyway I’d just refer to it as Indie R&B. I think R&B is the rock of my sound, but then all of those other influences come into play and just make it into its own kinda thing.

Who are your biggest influences?

I’m influenced by so many people but I can easily name the top 3 in descending order. Number 3 is Michael Jackson, he’s been my idol since I was a kid and I’ve always thought he was cool aesthetically and musically. I’ve always admired his style, his dancing, just everything. Stevie Wonder is 2nd and I feel he’s had a bigger influence on me in terms of creating melodies and beautiful sounding music on the piano. My biggest influence is Frank Ocean; 2012 will always be my favourite summer because of the memories I have attached to Frank’s ‘Channel Orange’ album. It’s easily my favourite album of all time, I love that guy! That question was so awesome!

You’ve just released your debut EP ‘Jodye’ in late 2018, what can we expect from you this year?

This year I want to explore what I can do musically that’s different. Every song I’ve written is so different from the last one and that really excites me. I can’t wait to share it all with everyone. I have this song that I won’t say too much about but it’s tough, it’s another one of those ‘rock’ inspired tracks.

We’re excited to hear you have more songs in the pipeline this year. Any plans to take your music on the road, and will London be a pit stop?

I have so much love for London you have no idea! So much great music and culture comes from there. I definitely want to get over there someday, I feel like I’d click out there.

Who is the top of your playlist right now?

I’ve been listening to Stevie Wonder’s ‘Songs In The Key of Life’ for the past two months. The track ‘Summer soft’ has been an ear worm for me. That’s an album everyone needs to listen to at least once in their lifetime I feel, it’s so beautiful man!

Thanks so much for taking the time to speak to The Mixtape, Jodye.

For fans and ‘fans-in-training’ keep your ears peeled for Jodye’s new song dropping in March to a music streaming service near you. In the meantime, you can stay up to date by following @jodyecolliaye on Instagram and Twitter, and take a listen over on Spotify.
